Issue date: 2/13/09 Section: News
Dianna Forester, representative of the Waukesha County Free Tobacco Coalition, which has no affiliation with UW-Waukesha, contacted all of the Wisconsin colleges to introduce the idea of a smoking ban.
Forester contacted UW-Waukesha about their proposal and the idea was brought up in a Steering Committee meeting which included the Dean, Associate Dean, and the president of Student Government Association (SGA) Dan Posca. The policy at this time restricts smoking to the out of doors. During the meeting the committee decided they were already happy with the school's policy, but decided to put it to a student population vote since the make up the majority of the campus population.
SGA began to look into a way they could get as many student opinions as possible. They decided to make a survey regarding how the students felt about UW-Waukesha's current policy and the new proposed policy. SGA will be distributing the survey at the beginning of the spring semester. They decided they could get more students to respond in spring, instead at the end of fall semester when finals and homework start piling up. Adminstration is not prepared to take action on this policy unless the student survey outcome warrants looking into this issue further.
