The UW-Waukesha men's basketball team ended their season falling just short in the State Finals. The Cougars lost 67-60, against the hosting team Madison Tech who beat them in last year's finals. The Cougars put up a great team effort against Tech, tying the game with five minutes to play. David Rodgers had 22 points and 7 rebounds, and Wes Brown added 17 points. However, with the help of home court, Madison Tech was able to come away with the State Championship.
The road to state was not easy for the Cougars. The men had to beat a very tough Milwaukee Tech team in the regional championship to qualify for the state tournament. They won that contest 73-67.
The Cougars next beat UW-Marshfield in the semi finals 84-70. The team was led by Aaron Miller's record performance. Miller had 25 points and 11 rebounds and went 11 for 11 from the field which is a UW-Waukesha Men's Basketball record. Wes Brown also added 19 points in the victory.
The men finished their season with 21 wins and just 3 losses. Wes Brown was named first team all-state and was the Conference "Player of the Year". Brown also finished with a team high 577 points, averaged 24 per game and shot 91% from the free throw line going 104 of 114. David Rodgers was named first team all conference. He had team highs in assists and steals. Mike Albert led the team in rebounds with 9 per game and was named under the honorable mention team.
Coach Nelson was very happy with the way his team played. "It was a terrific season. To win our tough 13 team conference back-to-back seasons is an outstanding accomplishment," said Nelson. He concluded by saying "We were so close to winning the state title this year. The guys played their hearts out all season and I could not be more proud of them."
