bin went? If that bottle is placed at the UW-Waukesha campus, you will
be rather appalled at the result due to the mounting evidence that has been uncovered
confirming that UW-Waukesha has become rather laxed on its environmental
consciousness.
A source, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Observer that they
witnessed the janitorial staff mixing recycling with garbage for some time.
When the source went to question the custodian the response he received was
that "It all ends up in the same place." Clearly this was an issue that needed
to be looked into.
The first to look was the campus dumpsters. The campus has two large
dumpsters, one for garbage, and one for recycling. After peering inside, it
was shocking to see the contents of the recycling bin were filled with an array
of garbage bags and the occasional cardboard box. At least the box was broken
down, if that is any consolation.
If anyone on this campus should have an understanding of the recycling policies, it would be the campus dean, Patrick Schmitt. When first interviewed the dean was very assuring stating that "We do recycle and it goes to the city for disposing." He continued saying that he "Encourages recycling."
When the mix up at the dumpsters was explained to him , he responded that the campus doesn't have the staff to sort through the receptacles and that recycling is more of a voluntary effort. Students who takes the time to recycle should be able to expect the staff to do their part.
