Students go the extra mile

University of Wisconsin-Waukesha faculty/student research symposium will be held at the campus Saturday,April 25. This collaboration between students and faculty gives faculty an insight into the future of research and students an opportunity to engage in hands-on experimentation with individual guidance from a professor.
The event will take place in the Commons. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
A free continental breakfast will be served at 8:15 a.m., presentations will begin at 9 a.m. Twelve students will present in two morning sessions and one afternoon session.
At 11:15 am, UW-Waukesha Dean Patrick
Schmitt will deliver the keynote address, and a free lunch will follow. Presentations resume at 1 p.m., and the day will conclude with the awarding of certificates at about 2 p.m.
Students investigated a variety of topics, listed in
order of presentation:
"Rule Utilitarianism" byMark Heidenreich (East Troy); faculty mentor, Tim Dunn, philosophy.
"Civil Rights Heroes: Homegrown courage inspiring generations" by Melissa Flynn (Waukesha); faculty mentor, Peggy Rozga, English.
"Kafka'sWomen" by Abigail Umbs
(Wauwatosa); faculty mentor, Sheila Carmody,
English.
"A Cast Study: Carcinoma of the heart" by
Katharine Nelson (Big Bend); faculty mentor Paul Zillgitt, biological sciences.
"Effects of bacterial contamination on ethanol production" by John Mattson (Waukesha); faculty mentor, Asif Habib, chemistry.
"Service learning in a freshman engineering
course" by Ian Blair (Oconomowoc); faculty mentor, Luis Rodriguez, engineering.
"What does a mathematician do?" by Erica
Strom (West Allis) and Jared Ness (New Berlin); faculty mentor, Shubhangi Stalder, mathematics.
"The legend of Joseph K: A pathway between
mythology and modernism" by Bricelyn Stermer
(Oconomowoc); faculty mentor, Sheila Carmody,
English.
"No animal left behind: Problems facing veterinary care on Indian reservations" by Laura Ziegler (Whitewater); faculty mentor, Ellyn Lem, English.
"Kennedy - Flexible Response" by Jon Osmer

"Hunting for answers through ideology: The role of hunting on the ideological formation of college students in Wisconsin" by Ben Hoffman (Muskego); faculty mentor, Joe Foy, political science.
