As students begin the fall semester, they are bombarded with tuition and fees. However students don't ask where the money goes.

Aside from regular tuition for each student's classes, each person is charged a segregated fee. This goes toward funding for all the campus clubs and organizations. With more than $400,000 going towards clubs this year, each student has the right to know what their money is being spent on, and who is deciding where the money goes.

SUFAC, Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee, is the root of the money tree. This committee is the group who decides what clubs gets ample financial support. The committee consists of nine members, five students and four UW-Waukesha Faculty and Staff members, each in elected positions.

The budgeting process is is quite an intricate and lengthy ordeal. First to be put simply, each club/organization on campus decides how much funding will be needed for the upcoming year. The advisors of each club draw up a budget for any necessary tools, equipment, outings, campus events, T-shirts, food, etc.

After submitting each clubs budget forms, the advisors and student leaders attend the SUFAC budget meeting to determine what each group will receive financially. Clubs may get less than they requested. According to Sue Kalinka, a non-voting member of SUFAC, the budgeting systems set up for budgeting is great. She said, "everyone feels like they have a voice."

Since each student pays these clubs and organizations, more people need to get involved. Each year every student is paying $149.05 to support clubs. The school offers dozens of clubs focused on everything from religions and, ethnic backgrounds to hobbies and, academiac successes. Be sure to take advantage of these opportunities, and get your money's worth. For further information on campus groups and organizations, pamphlets can be found near the student services office.
