Why do older adults go back to school?

Issue date: 10/28/09 Section: News
With roughly around 600 returning adult students, it makes you wonder what drives them to come back for an education. That's a slight bigger increase versus the past school year with around 530 returning adults. Is it because of the economy taking a toll on job positions? Today, as the economy stands, people are losing their jobs every day. Due to this instance more adults are coming or going back to school.
Attending UW - Waukesha is a woman named Genea Smith, who is a returning student in her 40's. She previously worked as an accountant and now owns a pet care industry. Smith is not going back to school because of the economy, and now plans on pursuing a new career in a specialized field that requires a degree.
Another student here at UW - Waukesha is going back to school for another reason, because of the economy. James Franecki is returning to college, he previously attended Scottsdale Community College. His plan, at the time, was to establish residency so that he could transfer to Arizona State University, but that did not happen. After starting his own business, he took courses at Lakeland College to help him understand the back office of a business like financial accounting, managerial accounting, and others. He unfortunately did not finish. After one semester, he returned home to save money to go back to school. As years went on, he married and had three children. He was working in the Information Technology Consulting field for about 25 years, holding various positions such as sales, recruiter, management, and partner. James is currently taking classes to obtain his Associate's Degree. After getting his Associate's, he wants to transfer to a four year institution.
Maybe some returning adults are here for the first time just like Corey Tracy. Tracy, 29, worked previously as a truck driver for eight years. He currently is attending UW - Waukesha for a degree in engineering. His decision to go to college was based on his hard work as a truck driver. That motivated him to go to college and maybe have a better future. He also holds tutoring sessions in the Study Center, and is a part of New Horizons, a club on campus that supports returning students and non - traditional students.
While some students have similar stories on why they returned or decided to start, there are some students who just want to feel the college experience.

I think that if peopel want to study, then it is necessary to give them such an opportunity.

For me, it's just an exceptional case, not the tendency.
