Getting wrapped up in homework and extracurricular activities is easy for college students to do. When school, work, and friends demand attention, they often forget about the wider world and its needs.

However, some community-minded students are committed to working for good causes and are doing so through student clubs.

Already this semester, College Republicans hosted a car wash at a local Wal-Mart on Oct. 3 and a bake sale in the Hub Oct. 12 - 14. Proceeds went to the organization Homes for Our Troops, which recently broke ground to build a house for an army veteran who lost both his legs. Chairman of College Republicans Nik Rettinger said, "With the help of everyone on campus we raised a little over $150. It was a huge response."

Campus Crusade for Christ teamed up with Invisible Children, an international organization focused on helping child victims of war in east Africa. They held a book drive from Oct. 26 - Nov. 13 to provide new and used textbooks and paperbacks to support education in Uganda. They also put on the "Change 4 Change" campaign, which encouraged students to give their spare change to the cause.

Pre-Health Care Club raised $250 on Oct. 28 - 29 to go to the Dr. Joan Casey Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Co-President Sibel Aydemir said a member of their club whose mother died of breast cancer was the inspiration to donate to this foundation named after her. The club also plans to start a donation drive in December for our troops overseas.

Members of Future Educators Club have volunteered time to paint pumpkins with the children at the campus day care for Halloween. They also held a bake sale on Nov. 12 to raise money for either a local charity or a needy family; they have not yet decided where it will be best spent.

On Oct. 30 Organization of Latin American Leaders hosted Fiesta Para la Communidad, an event meant to celebrate the diversity of UW-Waukesha and the surrounding community.

Student Government Association hosted a blood drive on campus Nov. 11 to support the Blood Center of America.
