A little known service that UW-Waukesha provides is counseling services. Counselor Amy Walker is available to all students in the Study Center Mondays - Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Amy Walker has been connecting with college students since 2003 and has enjoyed being a support system when they have no one to fall back on. She always maintains an objective, non-judgmental, laid-back attitude when working with students to make them feel comfortable.

It was while she was an undergraduate at UW-Eau Claire that she realized she wanted to be a counselor. She graduated with a master's degree from UW-Stout in 2004 where she majored in art and psychology and is a member of the American College Counselor Association.

Benefits of counseling with Walker include:
•Opportunity to be heard.
•Help in thinking of possibilities.
•A challenge to take the very best care of themselves they can.
•Questions to see things from another perspective.
•Ability to talk about anything as all topics are open for discussion.
•Information about local resources they can turn to.

A better understanding of themselves and a feeling of empowerment.
Common issues encountered by Walker include, but are not limited to:
•Anxiety.
•Depression.
•Family relationships.
•Romantic relationships.
•Chemical/substance abuse.
•General stress, life, time, etc...
•Exploring gender identity and sexual orientation.

Students may not want to get help from a counselor because their family doesn't want them to share what is going on and just wants them to get over it. Walker responds by saying, "What I would want them to know is that there are things never meant to be carried alone. Generally speaking, when people have an opportunity to release and share what is going on, there's a sense of relief."

Walker is the only counselor on campus, so her schedule must stay open to be available for students. She has one hour appointments which are always scheduled. These appointments are weekly at first before eventually spreading out to every other week. She's also available for short-term counseling.

To take a free anonymous mental health assessment, head to UW-Waukesha's website and click on "Services for Students." Then click on "Anonymous Mental Health Screening Tool" and next "Online Screening." You will be screened for depression, alcohol use, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, anxiety, and post dramatic stress. Again, this is completely anonymous, so Walker does not have access to it.

To schedule an appointment, be sure to stop at the front desk in the Study Center, room W100. Appointments are confidential.
