Man being charged with UW-Waukesha grads murder appears in court
Melissa Haffner
Issue date: 12/9/09 Section: News
The man being charged in the stabbing death of former UW-Waukesha student Samantha Peterson, 21, appeared in court on Thursday Dec. 10 for a status hearing. David A. Wapp, 29, has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect. At the beginning of the hearing, Wapp was brought in by sheriffs in a full restraint chair. Wapp's attorney requested he be held locally in the Waukesha County Jail as opposed to his previous residence in the Dodge Correctional Facility, so that it would be more feasible for him to be evaluated by psychologists. The judge was concerned about housing Wapp in the jail but will allow him to stay for two weeks.
In the meantime he will be evaluated by two psychologists, one chosen from the defense and Dr. Collins from the county. The defense claims Wapp has had mental health issues since the age of 5, and at this point are still trying to track down these records. Wapp will appear in court again on January 5.
